Saint-Maurice River

Shawinigan is home to more than one river, but the Saint-Maurice River holds a special place in the hearts of its residents.

  • This majestic river flows through Shawinigan, right into downtown. It played a key role in the city’s founding and industrial boom and has now become one of its greatest tourist treasures—with a truly fascinating history.

  • Every Shawiniganais has a favorite spot to pause and take it all in. Some of the best places to admire the river include: Rapides-des-Hêtres, Mont des Jeunes, The docks on Avenue du Capitaine-Veilleux, Parc des Piles, Parc des Papetiers, and of course, the iconic Promenade du Saint-Maurice!

  • There are so many ways to enjoy the river! From water, land, or even the air, there’s something for everyone. Locals love to swim, relax on a terrace with a view, or ride the waves on a SUP, kayak, canoe, boat, jet ski, or pontoon. Plus, there are several free public access points to make the most of this natural wonder!
