It is with great pleasure that I share with you my Shawi in fall, the one that I like to rediscover every day with my husband and, when I have the opportunity, with my grandchildren! Yay to early retirement, which gives me more time to enjoy the pleasures of life.
For a romantic stay in Shawi, I suggest you start with a trip to the Balkans and the Mediterranean by booking a table at the restaurant and gîte aux Traditions in the St-Jean-des-Piles sector. A discovery you will remember. You will meet Meggie and Venelin who will concoct dishes from their country of origin. You have to try the meat guvetché or the vegetarian version. We loved it!
Then, head to the Centre des arts of Shawinigan or the Maison de la culture Francis-Brisson for a show. There is no shortage of choice: theatre, humour, classical music, jazz and so on. We always find something we love there. At the Centre des arts, no matter where you are, you can see the stage clearly. At the Maison de la culture, it is the decor, the historical atmosphere and the acoustics that enhance the experience.
In terms of accommodation, I suggest ‘La suite Hébergements’ in downtown Shawinigan. The rustic-modern look of the rooms is really nice, with brick walls and vintage elements that refer to the history of Shawinigan. You can even check in to your room completely independently.
After a good night of sleep, why not put on a pair of shoes and go for a walk downtown? Wherever I go, walking is, in my opinion, the best way to take the pulse of a town and discover little hidden treasures! I love doing the downtown circuit, which is particularly beautiful during fall! Do not forget to stop in front of the historical panels that you will come across along your route. You will learn a little more about the history of the city.
During the circuit, you can also stop at the Espace culturel Onikam. You will discover the culture and arts of the First Nations and the very touching Nikanik exhibition. PSST! If you have grandchildren, bring back a set to craft pretty butterflies or buy them a little souvenir.
In the afternoon, I suggest you treat yourself with an experience that will amaze you. Book a seaplane flight with Bel-Air Laurentien Aviation. There are several packages available. The classic package lasts 20 minutes and takes you to fly over the Saint-Maurice River towards La Mauricie National Park. You will also have a magnificent view of the hydroelectric dam and the Grand-Mère bridge. It will be 20 memorable minutes!
If you want to continue with international flavors during your stay, I suggest La Pointe à Bernard with its French cuisine. I love this friendly little restaurant and I have to say that the wine prices are advantageous. I love the starter of fondant brie on pears, balsamic port and walnuts. I also often let myself be tempted by the steak or the fresh pasta with smoked salmon sauce. Enjoy your dinner!
The next day, continue the local discoveries by driving to the Grand-Mère sector! Along the way, stop at La Mie de Grand-Mère bakery and pastry shop to stock up on food. Top tip: let yourself be tempted by one of their incredible mille-feuilles!
When you arrive at Parc des Papetiers, enjoy the remarkable view of the majestic river and the suspension bridge dating from 1928! Sit down to enjoy your picnic, before undertaking the ascent of the observation tower.
You can continue your walk to admire the natural and architectural treasures of the surroundings, including the ‘Quartier des Anglais’ (English district), the Rocher de Grand-Mère and the parc de la Rivière-Grand-Mère. Enjoy your stay in Shawi!
